Bigfork is a charming town in northwestern Montana.
With its population of roughly 5,000, it really provides a sense of close community where everyone knows each other.
But that doesn’t mean you cannot find fun things to do here. Bigfork offers something special for everyone.
Here are seven must-do activities for your visit in 2024.
1. Explore Flathead Lake
Exploring Flathead Lake is an absolute must when in Bigfork. I spent a sunny afternoon kayaking across the lake’s pristine waters, feeling completely at peace.
Flathead Lake is perfect for boating, paddleboarding, and fishing.
If you’re a nature enthusiast, the nearby Wayfarers State Park and Somers Beach State Park offer stunning views and plenty of spots to relax.
I was lucky enough to attend Paddle Fest, an event that brings together water sports enthusiasts for competitions and fun.
And if you’re into more thrilling water activities, the Whitewater Festival is an event you shouldn’t miss.
It’s exhilarating to watch or participate in the action-packed events held there.
2. Stroll Around Bigfork Village
Bigfork Village is like stepping back in time with its quaint, old-timey vibe.
I enjoyed wandering through the local shops, each filled with unique treasures.
The art galleries are a highlight, with Electric Buffalo Gallery and Bigfork ARTFusion showcasing impressive local artwork.
During my visit, I attended the Bigfork Festival of the Arts, which is held on the first weekend of August.
The festival transforms the village into a bustling hub of creativity and culture, with artists displaying their works, live music, and delicious food vendors.
It’s a perfect way to spend a summer day, immersing yourself in the local culture.
3. Hike the Scenic Trails
Hiking in Bigfork offers some of the most scenic trails I’ve ever experienced.
The Swan River Nature Trail is a favorite of mine, offering serene river views and an easy path for all skill levels.
For more of a challenge, the Crane Mountain Trail provides breathtaking panoramas of the valley below.
My personal favorite is the Jewel Basin Hiking Area, where the trails wind through wildflower meadows and past sparkling lakes.
Wildlife viewing is also a common treat – on one hike, I spotted deer and a variety of bird species.
4. Attend a Show at Bigfork Summer Playhouse
The Bigfork Summer Playhouse is a gem for theater lovers. I had the pleasure of watching a Broadway favorite performed with such passion and talent, it rivaled any big-city production.
The playhouse offers a rotating schedule of shows from May through September, featuring everything from classic musicals to modern hits.
If you miss the summer season, don’t worry. The Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts hosts performances year-round, including concerts, plays, and other cultural events.
Attending a show here is an excellent way to spend an evening, immersed in the local arts scene.
5. Visit Local Breweries and Distilleries
Sampling local brews and spirits is always a highlight of my trips, and Bigfork didn’t disappoint. Flathead Lake Brewing Co.
offers a fantastic selection of craft beers, each with its own unique flavor. The gastropub menu is perfect for pairing with their brews – I highly recommend the fish and chips.
Another great spot is Whistling Andy Distillery, where I enjoyed a tour that walked us through the distilling process.
The tasting session afterward was a treat, with housemade spirits that capture the essence of Montana.
It’s a great way to spend an afternoon, learning about and savoring the local flavors.
6. Go Whitewater Rafting
Whitewater rafting on the Swan River is an adventure I’ll never forget.
I joined a guided tour that catered to both beginners and experienced rafters, making it accessible and thrilling.
The rush of navigating the rapids was balanced by moments of calm, where we could take in the stunning natural beauty surrounding us.
Memorial Day Weekend is particularly special with the Annual Bigfork Whitewater Festival.
The event brings together adrenaline junkies for competitive races and fun activities.
7. Take a Llama Trekking Adventure
One of the most unique experiences in Bigfork is llama trekking with Swan Mountain Llama Trekking.
I went on a guided hike where the llamas carried our supplies, leaving us free to enjoy the stunning scenery.
The treks can range from a few hours to multi-day adventures, depending on your preference.
We hiked through lush forests, past cascading waterfalls, and enjoyed breathtaking mountain views.
The llamas were gentle and added a fun, whimsical element to the hike.
It’s a fantastic way to explore the natural beauty of the area while enjoying the company of these friendly animals.
